The 6,000 sq. ft. expansion of a private elementary school consisting mainly of a new gymnasium with several offices and classrooms is situated on de l’Acadie Boulevard in the borough of Cartierville in Montreal. The mandate sought to give the school a functional and modern gymnasium destined for the use of school-aged children. This contemporary extension integrates with the existing building by using similar yellow brick, typical of Quebec’s educational buildings of the second half of the 20th century. The building is embedded partially underground in order to harmonize with the heights of the surrounding residential buildings. The gymnasium’s entrance is scaled to provide a new main entrance to the building for special functions and gatherings in the gym. It leads to the central axis connecting the old and the new. In addition, the red composite panels convey a dynamic and youthful touch to the classical rhythm of the existing building.
